Q&A: Querying Tips

Anonymous asked:

do you have any tips for querying? is there anything you wish you had or hadn’t done?

HMM. Well, no new tips, really. Query only finished, polished work. Research agents before you query. Don’t query anyone you don’t really want to work with. Work on something new while you wait. Follow guidelines. Don’t be an ass. All stuff you’ve likely heard a million times before.

Things I Wish I’d Done

* Worked a bit harder on my query and manuscript. Even though I guess they “worked” I know they could have been better.

* Spent more time writing new things and less time waiting to hear back.

* Taken up meditation/yoga/running/other stress-relieving activities.

Things I Wish I Hadn’t Done

* Taken rejection personally.

* Compared myself to others.

* Re-read my query/synopsis/manuscript after I’d hit send.

* Told those outside my inner circle I was querying.

* Looked at the statistics, because omg scary.
